Description:

2nd-3rd century AD. A carved schist bust of a bodhisattva with nimbus to the rear, the head with complex top-knot and brow-band, long earlobes with pendant earrings, narrow moustache and urna to the brow, decorated collar and swags of beads to the neck and draped mantle to the shoulder; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Jongeward, D. Buddhist Art of Gandhara in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2018, item 84. 73 kg total, 83cm with stand (32 3/4"). From the property of a London gentleman; formerly in a UK collection, acquired in the 1990s.
